Recently our Book Nook has been an area of respite for the children. When the classroom feels overwhelming they are encouraged to head into this cozy space to pick up a book, or just relax on the rocking chairs, bean bag, or giant cushion. Some challenges of this space have been: getting out of the bean bag, sharing the space with multiple people, and selecting just a few books. This is typically an independent reading space during center time and a read-aloud space at the end of our mornings. I have a feeling you are asking "Independent reading? My child doesn't read yet! What is she talking about?" We do something called a "Book Look" where children are encouraged to select a book that appeals to them, look at the pictures, and determine what they think the story is about. As children begin to recognize words the story may change and they will have the opportunity to discover their favorite books in a whole new light! What was your favorite childhood book? What is your child's?
